CARES Act Funds support students at Tillamook Bay Community College

May 13, 2020

Tillamook, OR – Tillamook Bay Community College has awarded 130 eligible students with $78,000 in emergency financial aid grants with funding received through the CARES Act, part of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, distributed by the U.S. Department of Education. The college received a total of $315,778 under 18004(a)1 of the CARES Act  of which 50% is being used to support students who were directly impacted as a result of changes that took place on campus resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each of the 130 students received $600. The amount was a standard average of funding students who experienced the campus disruption would need. The remaining $79,889 in funds will be distributed to students who become eligible during spring or summer term and those who apply and are eligible to receive additional emergency fund support under the CARES Act.

The college applied for and received the CARES Act funding to ensure students in Tillamook County have the support they need to continue their education during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of May 20, 2020, TBCC has distributed all students eligible under the Cares Act guidelines with funding.

“We are very grateful to receive this funding,” said Ross Tomlin, Tillamook Bay Community College President. “The CARES Act funds can be used as grants for students to purchase food, course materials, technology, healthcare, housing, childcare, and other expenses. Many of these are basic needs that we know our students struggle to meet. These funds will help our students to continue with their education during these difficult times.”

Eligible students were notified via email they would receive the funds with information on what expenses the funds can be used to cover and how to apply for additional funding if the amount was insufficient to meet their needs caused by campus disruptions. Students who are not eligible to receive the CARES Act funding but have suffered a hardship during the pandemic, can apply for emergency funds available through the TBCC Foundation. An application for emergency funds is available on the TBCC student portal MyTBCC.
