CARES Act Funds support students at Tillamook Bay Community College

July 15, 2020

Tillamook, OR – During Spring Term 2020, Tillamook Bay Community College awarded 131 students with $85,617 in emergency financial aid grants with funding received through the CARES Act, part of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, distributed by the U.S. Department of Education. The college received a total of $315,778 under 18004(a)1 of the CARES Act of which 50% is being used to support students who were directly impacted as a result of changes that took place on campus resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each of the 131 students received $600. The amount was a standard average of funding students who experienced the campus disruption would need. An additional 13 students received additional funding support. The remaining $72,272 in funds will be distributed to eligible students during Summer or Fall Term.

The college applied for and received the CARES Act funding to ensure students in Tillamook County have the support they need to continue their education during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of June 13, 2020, all students in Spring Term who are eligible under the Cares Act guidelines to receive funding have received it.

Eligible students were notified via email they would receive the funds with information on what expenses the funds can be used to cover and how to apply for additional funding if the amount was insufficient to meet their needs caused by campus disruptions. Students who are not eligible to receive the CARES Act funding but have suffered a hardship during the pandemic, can apply for emergency funds available through the TBCC Foundation. An application for emergency funds is available on the TBCC student portal MyTBCC. This same process will be used during Summer and Fall Terms.
