CARES Act Funds support students at Tillamook Bay Community College

October 16, 2020

Tillamook, OR – To assist students and the College during the Coronavirus pandemic, Tillamook Bay Community College received $315,778 under 18004(a)1 of the CARES Act, part of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, distributed by the U.S. Department of Education. Fifty percent of the funding is required to be used to support students who were directly impacted because of changes that took place on campus resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.  As of October 15, 2020, the College awarded 187 students with $148,876 in emergency financial aid grants with these funds.

Each of the 187 students received $600. Ninety-four students who previously received the $600 received $280 in summer or fall.  The amounts distributed were a standard average of funding students who experienced the campus disruption would need for each of the terms. Eighteen students have applied for and received additional funding support due to an increased hardship caused by the disruption. The remaining balance of $9,013 in funds will be distributed to eligible students during the remainder of fall and winter term.

The college applied for and received the CARES Act funding to ensure students in Tillamook County have the support they need to continue their education during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of October 15, 2020, all students in spring, summer, and fall term who are eligible under the Cares Act guidelines to receive funding have received it.

Eligible students were notified via email they would receive the funds with information on what expenses the funds can be used to cover and how to apply for additional funding if the amount was insufficient to meet their needs caused by campus disruptions. Students who are not eligible to receive the CARES Act funding but have suffered a hardship during the pandemic, can apply for emergency funds available through the TBCC Foundation. An application for emergency funds is available on the TBCC student portal MyTBCC.
