Commercial Truck Driving (CDL)
Truck Driver Training Program – CDL Test Preparation
Employers in Tillamook County and within the United States are reporting a great shortage of trained truck drivers. To help meet the needs of local employers, Tillamook Bay Community College offers a Truck Driver Training Program, which trains students to take both the written and driving portions of the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) test. To date, 98% of students who have completed the training course have gone on to earn their CDL.
The program consists of four weeks of training including both classroom and driving time – as well as time on the state-of-the-art truck driving simulator – that prepares students for local, high-wage jobs.
The cost of the program is $5,000 plus additional fees associated with a CDL license (approximately $460). Grants, loans, and scholarships are available to help cover the cost.
TBCC has also partnered with Clatsop Community College to provide this CDL training in Astoria, Oregon.
TBCC also offers a one-week CDL refresher course for those who are returning to a career as a truck driver. Contact the CDL Program Coordinator to learn more.

Meet Your Instructors
Bret Rivenes, Instructor Tillamook
Bret is from the great state of Montana. He brings over twenty-five years of truck driving experience to the program, twenty of which were in the military. His favorite part about teaching is the ‘hands-on’ driving portion. When he is not training our CDL Program students, he enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities, especially taking walks on the beach with his wife.
Bret’s words to live by are, “Do the best you can do and all will come.”
James Crowe, Instructor Astoria
James grew up in Northern California and moved to Portland in 1996. In his 40+ years in trucking, he traveled in all of the lower 48 states as well as Canada and Alaska, covering about 4 million miles. He previously taught for a year at a truck driving school in Portland. He enjoys passing what he has learned on to a new generation of drivers. For him, trucking was all about the adventure; he likes to travel and this industry offers a chance to see the country. In his spare time, he enjoys the river where he lives in Astoria.
His advice to students, “Nothing good happens fast in a truck!”
Rent the Truck Driving Simulator for your Business and Employees
TBCC’s Mobile Truck Simulator brings quality simulation training to business locations through state-of-the-art equipment. Simulator training offers a safe, controlled environment for drivers to practice adverse weather and road conditions and respond to road hazards. Beyond semi-trucks the simulator has potential to train school bus drivers, snow-plowing and waste management truck drivers. It can replicate any road/driving condition – including hazardous weather – as well as any type of hauling load, including liquids.
Drivers trained on the simulator experience fewer equipment failures, and lower accident and insurance rates. Training on the simulator prevents unnecessary wear and tear on actual vehicles.
In February of 2022, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will begin requiring anyone seeking a CDL to receive formal training from an approved training provider.
