Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Process

Financial Aid Suspension can be appealed by filling out a Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal form. Completion of the appeal form does not guarantee reinstatement of financial aid.

AAOT business

A student may appeal if the reason for failure to meet SAP was the result of extenuating circumstances, (documentation may be required) if the situation that caused the poor performance has been resolved. An appeal must be received and approved prior to or during the term for which the aid is being requested as financial aid will not be awarded retroactively. Students will receive notification via TBCC email within 2-4 weeks of appeal submission with one of the following results:

  • Reinstatement on probation
  • Reinstatement on an academic plan with requirements
  • Denial of financial aid

Probation

Probation is granted upon the approval of a financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal. Probation allows a student to receive financial aid for one term. A student must meet satisfactory academic progress by the end of that term to remain eligible for subsequent financial aid.

Probation with an Academic Plan

Probation with an Academic Plan is granted upon the approval of a Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal with the condition the student follows an academic plan. The student is eligible to receive financial aid as long as the student continues to follow the academic plan and meet the other SAP requirements.

While on Probation with an Academic Plan students must:

  • Follow the academic plan
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Successfully complete all courses listed on their academic plan.

Reinstatement of Financial Aid Eligibility

Students who do not meet SAP while on probation will no longer be eligible for financial aid. Financial aid eligibility may be reinstated when the student has achieved Financial Aid Good Standing by raising their cumulative GPA to a 2.0, and has achieving a cumulative completion of two-thirds (66.67%) of all credit hours attempted.

Students who do not successfully complete credits may be required to return financial aid as stated in Federal requirements. Learn More about Repayment of Financial Aid Funds.

Appealing Maximum Time Frame Extension

Students need to complete a program of study within 150% of the credits required. Students have the right to request an extension of their financial aid eligibility once per year.

Students must complete a Time Frame Extension Appeal form and include an academic plan. Completion of the appeal form does not guarantee reinstatement of financial aid.

While on a Time Frame Extension Appeal students must:

  • Follow the academic plan taking only courses required for the degree or certificate
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Successfully complete all courses listed on their academic plan.

Students must meet the requirements of the approved time frame appeal or they will no longer be financial aid eligible. If a time frame extension appeal is denied a student may submit a written request for review of the appeal to the Director of Student Services. If the Director of Student Services upholds the denial decision, the student may not submit any additional requests for funding.
